The T9 delivers its rated 2,000/1,950 MB/s on a 20Gbps Gen 2x2 port, shrugs off 3m drops, and transfers near the top of its class. But that port is rare — Macs cap it near 900 MB/s — it has no IP rating, and the Crucial X10 Pro beats it on speed and price.
— THE VERDICT · JUDGEANY EDITORSWhat the T9 is
Launched in October 2023, the Samsung Portable SSD T9 is the company's 20Gbps flagship for creators: NVMe inside, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 outside, rated up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,950 MB/s write on the 1TB and 2TB models (only the 4TB writes at 2,000). Capacities run 1TB to 4TB; the 1TB is model MU-PG1T0B. The shell borrows the T7 Shield's design language — rubberized, fabric-like, what Samsung calls "luxury added to ruggedness" — and the box includes USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables. A note on the name: some retailers list it as the "T9 Shield." Samsung's official name is the Portable SSD T9; there is no separate Shield SKU.
The specs that matter
The headline numbers only happen on a 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port with a cable that supports it — Samsung says to use the cable in the box. Drop protection is the ruggedness story here, not water: the T9 is rated for 3m drops (an internal free-fall test onto a metal plate, and drop damage is not covered by the warranty), but it carries no IP dust/water rating — the cheaper T7 Shield has IP65, the T9 doesn't. The rest of the sheet: 88 x 60 x 14 mm, 122 g, AES 256-bit hardware encryption, Samsung Magician support, Dynamic Thermal Guard keeping skin temperature under 140°F in controlled conditions, and a 5-year limited warranty.
What published tests found
PCWorld reviewed the 2TB model and gave it 4.5/5 plus an Editors' Choice award. Its CrystalDiskMark 8 results were good if uneven — aces at 32-queue 4K reads, noticeably weaker at single-queue 4K reads and 32-queue 4K writes — but in 48GB real-world transfers only the Crucial X10 Pro finished ahead of it. A 450GB write took 8 minutes 23 seconds, settling near 900 MB/s once the cache filled, and the drive stayed warm but comfortable in the hand. TechRadar measured 1,814/1,829 MB/s in the AJA 1GB test, 2,008/1,914 in CrystalDiskMark defaults, and 1,277/1,354 in its "real world" profile — reads of 1,700–2,000 MB/s and writes of 1,300–1,900 depending on the workload, close to the rated spec. TweakTown called the T9 the best-performing 20Gbps portable SSD they had tested at launch, and both PCMag and TechAdvisor scored it 90/100. We don't run a lab; these are published findings, and the scores below are editorial judgments based on them.
The Gen 2x2 caveat
The T9's headline speed is gated by a port most computers don't have. PetaPixel tested it on an M1 Max MacBook Pro — USB4, but no Gen 2x2 (no Apple Silicon Mac supports it) — and topped out around 905/900 MB/s, roughly half the rated speed. A 10Gbps port gives you roughly 1,000 MB/s. Only a Windows workstation with a 20Gbps port sees the full 2,000. Check your machine's USB spec for "20Gbps" or "USB 3.2 Gen 2x2" before buying — or get the T7 Shield, which runs at full tilt on any 10Gbps port.
What owners say
Owner sentiment is positive where it counts: speed for video and photo workflows, the grippy rubber shell, the pocketability. The 4TB listing held 4.4 stars across about 2,600 ratings on Amazon Canada, and the 1TB ranked among Amazon US's top sellers in external SSDs. Complaints track the reviews: no Gen 2x2 port on your machine, no headline speed; no IP rating despite the rugged marketing; and launch pricing sat above rivals — reviewers at the time called it overpriced next to the Crucial X10 Pro. Deals have since narrowed the gap; check it live on Amazon.
Who should buy it
Creators shuttling large video files between Windows machines with 20Gbps USB-C ports should consider it — check it live on Amazon. It's also a solid iPhone 15 ProRes 4K/60fps recording drive. Skip it if you're on a Mac (you'll never see 2,000 MB/s), if you need dust and water protection (the T7 Shield is IP65), if your typical transfers are 400GB-plus sustained writes, or if the Crucial X10 Pro or a USB4 rival is priced better the day you buy.
